1 day to go

It's Monday.  We went to school and taught for our 3 hours.  Our students are all creating their own Plan A Trip projects so our upcoming trip is meaningful.  We hope to keep in touch and send photos and updates as our travel evolves.

At this point all we know is that we will arrive in Madrid on Wednesday, October 15th  around 4PM with our plane arriving from Amsterdam.  We have a hotel reserved for 2 nights and that's the extent of our planning.
That's not entirely true.  We've planned.  We've gathered information but haven't made an final itinerary decisions.  For the last 6 years we've had an automatic route ahead of us via the Caminos in Spain and the Wainwright trail in England.  This time, while we have tentatively decided to follow the Via de La Plata (the Silver Route) backwards ending in Seville, we are leaving our options open.

Right now we plan to get to Salamanca, considered by some to be Spain's most beautiful city and begin riding there (after a couple days exploring the city).  We'll get to Salamanca via bus, train, or perhaps rental car, all to be decided when we arrive.

We're looking forward to meeting up with Dennis and Karen Gray on Thursday evening as they arrive in Madrid that afternoon.  We booked our hotels separately but we're only 1 1/2 miles apart!

I finally feel ready and more in the mode of "trust the process," knowing that our experience will inform our adventure, balancing newness with the ease of the familiar.  And knowing that we are GOING TO SPAIN!

Here's some pics of our bicycle packing.  Yay Craig!!

Our bikes getting ready to fit in their suitcases.

The soft bags that carry our bikes when we're not riding.

Now for the Samsonite suicases that will carry them on the plane.

And since they can't weigh more than 50 pounds, we are weighing them and adjusting accordingly.

It's alot and there are those times when I think:  why don't we just rent?  The verdict isn't in.

October 19 Day 2 in Salamanca Hotel Trypp After a record breaking 11 hours of sound sleep another cameo breakfast appearance called. Love the tomato purée to put on bread among the many other delights . Off to Salamanca we went on our bikes! Our hotel is a bit out of town, across the river. We were intent upon finding a certain bike store to check out and tune up our bikes but found José at Bicycletas Palacio. Perfect! Little hole in the wall repair place and for 24 Euros each he had our bikes adjusted and ready to rock and ride. In the meantime, we strolled the town feeling in sync with the world. Beautiful college town, university founded in 1100,a UNESCO world heritage site and just the right size to experience. Recommended by José we found the Jockey Club a locally patronized restaurant and tried the typical dish of Salamanca, chanfaina. I shall share the ingredients and say no more.
